According to a high-ranking defense official, the US armed forces executed a fatal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four people.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a craft operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Intelligence verified the vessel was transiting along a established narco-trafficking route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no American forces were harmed.”

Context and Prior Actions

This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on social media, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, pledging to escalate the military presence.

Only on Tuesday, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Justifies Tactics Amidst Scrutiny

The administration has faced growing demands to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a successful operation, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the limits of lawful warfare.

Although the administration has said the operation is about stopping drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official seemed to confirm a wider political objective. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “aims to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”

This indicates the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's current government.
