A high-ranking Russian general has been declared dead following an explosion in Moscow, according to reports from authorities.
The incident happened on Monday morning when an explosive device concealed beneath a vehicle exploded, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' operational training department.
Investigators stated that one theory under investigation suggests the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has remained silent.
Scene of the Attack
Teams have been sent to the location, which is understood to be in a southerly district of the capital.
Media coverage state the blast happened in a car park near a residential building.
History of Targeted Attacks
Since the beginning of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military personnel have been targeted within Moscow.
This new event comes after other serious incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a automobile blast in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a device placed on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a Ukrainian source previously attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are not publicly admitted as a matter of standard practice.
The war has been marked by covert operations reaching into the streets of the Russian capital.
The investigation into General Sarvarov's death is still underway.
