Those Siblings from the Dagestani Region Excelling in Mixed Martial Arts and at Manchester United.

Ibragim Ibragimov smiles as he thinks about how his family's life has changed since relocating to England from Dagestan in 2017.

"I adore it here," the Professional Fighters League competitor declares.

"My father and I frequently comment, 'this is the nation I should have been born in.'"

The 21-year-old departed his home in the Caucasus region of Russia as his father was convinced a relocation spanning more than 3,000 miles offered better professional prospects for him and his siblings.

The initial plan was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to finish school before enrolling in one of the country's colleges.

But, reality has turned out slightly distinct for the Ibragimov family.

Ibragim is now a professional MMA fighter and is seen as one of the leading prospects in the PFL, a leading MMA organization.

His brothers have taken a different path in athletics and have all been signed by Manchester United – with Amir pushing for a position in the senior squad.

"The primary thing for us is to squeeze everything from our chosen fields," says Ibragim.

"I hope them to play for every one of the best teams in the world. Today it is Man United, tomorrow it could be a different team."

Starting as Grapplers to Soccer Talents

Located in the south of Russia, Dagestan has a mystical reputation among fight enthusiasts for generating a slew of UFC titleholders in recent years.

The area has a rich history in grappling, thriving in the sambo discipline and producing a host of Olympic and world champions.

This achievement is no accident, however, as children from the region are frequently encouraged to take up fighting, particularly wrestling, almost as soon as they can stand.

"When I was a kid, my dad was constantly instructing me and my younger brothers that we had to be strong, firstly to protect yourself, your relatives, and your companions," states Ibragim.

"So we all got used to combat, and that's why everyone understands how to fight in Dagestan. It's unsurprising."

"Amir was a excellent wrestler. You can see the transition from wrestling to football; clearly, it benefited my little brothers a great deal."

"Many of the footballers he faces lack the identical base he possesses. That's why he's stocky, strong and incredibly driven – due to wrestling."

Amir was only nine years old when he was put through his paces at Sheffield United. Unaware of his real age, coaches placed him with boys five years older.

He was not intimidated by the mistake and was more than comfortable holding his own against older players thanks to his background in wrestling.

"They thought Amir and I were the identical age, so the story goes," says Ibragim.

Amir was recruited, along with Ibragim's little brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The family's time in South Yorkshire was short-lived, however, as only weeks after signing for the Blades, Manchester United learned of Amir's talent and he moved over the Pennines consequently.

"They faced Manchester United in a tournament and Amir scored a brilliant free-kick," says Ibragim.

"One of their talent spotters watched him play and picked him immediately."

Six years after signing for the Manchester United club and at the age of 15, Amir was one of the most youthful players in the club's records to train with the first team when he did so in April 2023.

"Know what he said to me? 'This is where I should be'," Ibragim reveals.

"Can he be a first-team player for Manchester United? Without a doubt. They need to allow all the young players play now."

"In my opinion they would play less effectively than the existing starters. I think the youngsters are hungrier than the current squad members."

Following that, Gazik and Muhammad, the latter once on the books of Manchester City, have likewise made the move to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this kid is gifted," continues Ibragim.

"He picked up everything quicker than everyone else. He's a solid defender. He's going to be similar to a modern Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'The Dream' to Compete at the Theatre of Dreams

Ibragim has also moved to Manchester and spends most of his days sharpening his MMA skills at Manchester Top Team.

In August, he passed three weeks in his homeland at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, assisting Islam Makhachev get ready for a late-year UFC championship bout.

"I never have thought I would be training under Khabib," Ibragim says.

"He was the best fighter in the world – and we always used to look up to him when we were young."

"Today, I'm here in his gym and sparring alongside Islam Makhachev."

Recently training with two UFC titleholders from Dagestan, it is no surprise Ibragim states he is desperate to win a world title of his own someday.

But that does not stop him from occasionally fantasizing of representing United and walking out on the hallowed turf at Old Trafford, much like his brothers.

"I owned a PlayStation at home and I constantly used to play as Man United, scoring goals with legendary players," he recalls.

"Now, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's like a dream come true."

"A fight at Old Trafford? It's a ambition for me. I was discussing with the PFL guys about it to see if they could make it happen. It would be massive."
