While Beachgoers Escaped Danger, Viral Photo Captures Lifeguard Running ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, describes the renowned coast as her personal space. On that fateful weekend night, she, like many local residents, noticed loud noises ringing out across the suburb.

“We all thought the same, but I considered it was too light and there was nothing visible,” she explains. Exiting her apartment, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore signaled a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the street, conversing with a pair who had hurried up the incline still dripping wet, she noticed someone approaching at her rear. It was a lifeguard, sprinting to Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was alone heading in the direction that the crowd was trying to flee, and hauling that large equipment and without footwear … He was sprinting at something that surely every fibre in your being would signal you to move in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully full throttle sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism During Chaos

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous instances of courage in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, officers and medical teams attending to numerous the injured.

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many permanent lifeguards, remarked that the team acted heroically from the moment the incident began right into late that night.
